Deep Dive on Polyester
Organic Cotton vs Polyester: Why Plastic Isn’t Ideal for Baby Sheets
A lot of children’s bedding on the market looks similar at first glance. But look closer at the label and you’ll often find polyester or polyester blends. Polyester is cheap and convenient for manufacturers. For babies who sleep for many hours a day, it’s not always the best choice.
Bunnyjik takes a different approach. Our fitted sheets are made from thick, certified organic cotton. Here’s why we believe that matters for your child’s comfort and wellbeing.
What Is Polyester?
Polyester is a synthetic fibre made from PET – the same family of plastic used in drinks bottles. It is created in industrial chemical processes, then spun into yarns and knitted or woven into fabric.
From a manufacturer’s point of view, polyester has advantages: it is cheap, strong and easy to produce in huge volumes. From a baby’s point of view, it behaves differently to a natural fibre like cotton.
Heat and Moisture: How the Fabrics Actually Feel
Polyester: Warm and Clammy
Polyester does not absorb moisture in the way cotton does. When a baby sweats or the room is warm, polyester tends to:
- Trap heat next to the skin
- Hold humidity at the surface
- Feel clammy and less fresh over the night
Organic Cotton: Breathable and Regulating
Organic cotton is a natural cellulose fibre. It:
- Absorbs and releases moisture
- Allows air to circulate through the fabric
- Helps smooth out temperature spikes so your child feels more consistently comfortable
This is one of the biggest differences parents notice after switching to thicker organic cotton sheets – less overheating and fewer complaints about feeling “hot and sticky”.
Microfibres and Microplastics
Polyester and Microplastic Shedding
Every time polyester fabrics are washed, tiny plastic fibres (microplastics) can break away and enter wastewater. Over time, these can also accumulate as dust in the home.
For everyday clothing and bedding, this means polyester products can be a source of microplastic release in the environment and into indoor air.
Organic Cotton: No Plastic Fibre
Organic cotton is plant-based. It does not release plastic microfibres. While all textiles shed small fibres over time, cotton fibres are cellulose-based and do not contribute to microplastics in the same way.
Feel and Sound: How the Sheet Behaves on the Bed
Polyester: Synthetic Handfeel
Polyester fabrics can feel:
- Slippery or shiny
- Prone to static build-up
- Slightly “rustly” when a child moves on the bed
Organic Cotton: Quiet, Familiar Comfort
Organic cotton has the quiet, familiar feel of a favourite cotton T-shirt:
- Soft from day one, softer with each wash
- No plastic rustle when the baby moves
- No static shock or cling
For sensitive sleepers and light sleepers, these small differences can make night-time more peaceful.
Skin Sensitivity and Breathable Sleep Environments
Some babies have more delicate or eczema-prone skin. In these cases, overheating and trapped moisture can be particularly problematic. Because polyester retains heat and does not absorb moisture well, it can contribute to a less comfortable environment for sensitive skin.
Thick, breathable organic cotton helps keep the sleep surface feeling dry and balanced. It offers a simple, natural option when you want fewer variables and less synthetic material in a baby’s immediate environment.
Why Competitors Use Polyester (and Why Bunnyjik Doesn’t)
Why Polyester Is So Common
For many mass-market brands, polyester or cotton–polyester blends are the default choice because they:
- Keep fabric costs low
- Make it easy to hit very low price points
- Can be finished in ways that feel soft at first touch, even if that feel changes after washing
This is especially true for thin, low-cost sheets often imported in high volumes.
Why Bunnyjik Uses Only Organic Cotton in Its Fitted Sheets
Bunnyjik takes the opposite approach:
- We use 100% organic cotton in our fitted sheets, not polyester or polyester blends.
- We invest in thick, premium knits that feel better and last longer.
- We support our organic claims with independent certification rather than marketing terms.
For parents, the result is simple: no plastic fibre against your baby’s skin, and a noticeably more comfortable sheet under their body.
Summary: Why Organic Cotton Wins for Baby Bedding
- Temperature: Organic cotton breathes; polyester tends to trap heat.
- Moisture: Cotton absorbs and releases moisture; polyester holds it on the surface.
- Microplastics: Polyester sheds plastic microfibres; cotton does not.
- Feel: Cotton is quiet and naturally soft; polyester can feel synthetic and build static.
- Peace of mind: Certified organic cotton gives you a clear, natural alternative to plastic-based fibres.
This is why Bunnyjik builds its bedding around organic cotton, not polyester. We believe that the fibres closest to your child’s skin should be as natural, breathable and gentle as possible.
